Helping kids with Growth Hormone Deficiency grow strong — inside and out.
Supporting children and families through education, treatment and confidence building — one brave step at a time.
Hi! I'm Gro 👋
What is Growing Strong?
Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) is a medical condition where the body doesn't make enough growth hormone, which affects growth and development. Growing Strong helps families understand GHD and navigate every step with confidence — from the first doctor's visit to daily injections and beyond.

🧠 About GHD
What is Growth Hormone Deficiency?
GHD happens when the body doesn't make enough growth hormone. Let's walk through what that means — in plain language.
The tiny gland with a big job
Deep in the brain sits the pituitary gland — about the size of a pea. One of its jobs is to release growth hormone (GH), a chemical messenger that tells the body to grow.
GH helps bones get longer, muscles get stronger, and the whole body develop the way it should. When the pituitary doesn't send enough GH, growth slows down — that's Growth Hormone Deficiency.
The good news: GHD is well understood, and treatment can help many children reach a healthy height and feel their best.

Why it happens
Three kinds of GHD
From birth
Congenital GHD
Present from birth, often due to genetic differences in how the pituitary forms or works.
Later on
Acquired GHD
Develops later because of a medical condition, injury, or treatment affecting the pituitary.
Unknown
Idiopathic GHD
"Idiopathic" means the exact cause isn't known — which is more common than you might think.
What to watch for
Common signs
Every child is different. Signs a doctor may look at together include:
📏 Slower growth than peers🧒 A younger-looking appearance⏳ Delayed puberty💪 Lower muscle development⚖️ Changes in body composition
💙
Having one of these signs doesn't mean a child has GHD — many are common in healthy kids. Only a doctor can diagnose GHD, using the steps below.

A note for grown-ups
Testing days can feel big for a child. Bringing a favorite comfort item, explaining what to expect ahead of time, and planning a small reward afterward can make a real difference.
Your care team will give you specific instructions — always follow theirs first.
💉 Treatment journey
Growth hormone therapy, one step at a time
Starting treatment can feel overwhelming. Here's what it is, how it works, and tools to help you along the way.
What is the treatment?
GHD is treated with recombinant human growth hormone — a lab-made version of the same growth hormone the body normally produces. It's not a steroid; it simply replaces what's missing.
It's given as a small daily or weekly injection, usually with an easy-to-use pen. Over months and years, it helps the body grow. Your care team sets the dose and checks progress regularly.
"Brave looks different every day — and every day counts."
Medicines
Common GH medications
These are brand names your doctor might prescribe. Growing Strong doesn't recommend any specific product — your care team chooses what's right for your child.
Always follow the instructions from your prescriber and the official manufacturer materials that come with your medication.

BMI calculator
Body Mass Index is one number doctors track over time.
For children, BMI must be read against age-and-sex growth charts by a doctor — a plain number or adult category can be misleading. This tool is educational only and never a diagnosis.

Growing can feel like a big adventure. I'll show you how your body works, what doctors do, and how to be super brave for shots. Ready?
Gro's World
Big words, made simple
🧪 What are hormones?
Hormones are tiny messengers in your body. They zoom around telling different parts what to do — like "time to grow!" Growth hormone is the one that helps you get taller and stronger.
👩⚕️ What do doctors do?
Doctors are like detectives for your body. They measure how you're growing and help figure out the best way to help. They're on your team!
💉 What's a shot?
A shot is a quick way to give your body the growth hormone it needs. Most kids use a special pen. It might pinch for a second — but you are braver than you know.
📏 Why do I grow?
Growing happens when your bones get a little longer over time. With the right help, your body can keep growing strong — inside and out.

👨👩👧 For parents & caregivers
You've got this. And you're not doing it alone.
Practical, honest guidance for the medical, emotional, and financial parts of the GHD journey.
Getting started
Before treatment
🏥 Finding an endocrinologist
A pediatric endocrinologist specializes in hormones and growth. Ask your pediatrician for a referral, and check that they treat children specifically.
📋 Insurance & approval
GH therapy often needs prior authorization. Keep records of every test and letter — documentation is your best friend in appeals.
🧒 Preparing your child
Use simple, honest words. Let them ask questions. The Kids Zone and Gro's comic can help explain what's coming.

The whole child
Emotional support
💛 Building self-esteem
Praise effort and character, not just height. Help your child see all the ways they're strong — bravery, kindness, curiosity.
🛡️ Handling bullying
Being smaller can invite teasing. Practice responses together, loop in teachers, and remind your child that their worth isn't measured in centimeters.
🌱 Confidence strategies
Sports, arts, clubs — anywhere your child feels capable builds a confidence that carries into treatment too.
🧭 Mental health resources
If anxiety or low mood shows up, that's normal and worth support. A pediatric counselor can help — ask your care team for a referral.
Cost & coverage
Financial help
💳 Copay & assistance programs
Most GH manufacturers offer copay cards and patient-assistance programs. Ask your pharmacy and care team which apply to your medication.
🤝 Nonprofit support
Organizations like the MAGIC Foundation and the Human Growth Foundation offer family resources and community for growth-related conditions.
📑 Insurance guidance
If coverage is denied, you can appeal. Your endocrinologist's office often has staff who do this regularly — lean on them.
🔎 Keep good records
A simple folder of growth charts, test results, and letters makes every insurance conversation smoother.
💛 My story
Cameron’s Story
Growth is so much more than height
A personal journey turned into support for other children and families.
Diagnosed with Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) at age 10, I have faced challenges that extended beyond my physical growth.
Rather than allowing this diagnosis to define me, I wanted to turn my personal experience into an opportunity to help others. Combining my interest in technology and web design, I decided to create growthhormonedeficiency.org, an educational website designed to support children diagnosed with GHD and their families.
The goal of the website is to provide accessible information about GHD, treatment, and available resources while helping children build confidence and feel less alone in their journey.
Through this initiative, I hope to raise awareness of a condition that is often misunderstood and allow other children facing similar challenges to thrive. My experiences have taught me that growth is so much more than height.

About us
Growing Strong, created by Cameron
My name is Cameron, and I created Growing Strong because, as someone living with Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD), I understand that the journey involves more than physical growth. It can mean navigating treatment, facing uncertainty, and learning to feel confident in a world where you may feel different from your peers.
I wanted to create a place where children and families could find answers in simple terms and feel less alone. Through Growing Strong, I hope to turn my personal experience into something meaningful for others by raising awareness, providing accessible educational resources, and reminding every child that their diagnosis does not define them.
Growing Strong is my way of helping others grow stronger, inside and out.
